I just requested an audiobook, and then got  this message from owner.

I just wanted to make sure you know that the first tape is missing. Every other tape is there and in good condition and the workbook is blank. Would you still like me to send it?

Then I check the listing closer & notice they have added at tag "missing Tape 1."  I have never checked tags before, don't even know what they are.

Should listing be report as unswapable?  If the missing tape isn't a huge problem could I request a 1 point credit?  I just really don't get why they thought they could list the item with the tag.

I know I would not want a set missing one cassette. It would be unpostable, I think, as well.

This is found in the "Ask a Librarian" location on here:

  • "Audiobooks must be playable and have all the CDs/cassettes."

Her audio book shouldn't have been posted.  She could post about the audio book in the Book Bazaar, explaining it is missing a tape, but she shouldn't have posted it at all.

Just as books in print have certain requirements for posting, so do audio books.

Yes, totally unpostable, for the reasons Amber stated.  Using tags does not allow her to circumvent the posting requirements, and tags should not be used for copy-specific information anyway.  The sending member should cancel this request, since the item isn't postable, and so you won't lose any Wish List spot, if that's an issue.

It's analagous to "just wanted to make sure you know this book has the first 40 pages ripped out. Is that OK?"

You might want to explain to her that tags don't work that way.

I hate to be a tattle-tale but you may want to report this to PBS.  She is clearly misusing tags and other people might be getting unpostable items because she tagged the damaged.  I wonder how many newbies accepted an unpostable book for a credit because they thought that this was acceptable.

For pete's sake, the stuff people try to pull, did she offer to tell you what you miss?angry Tell that sender to cancel the transaction, the audio is not postable on PBS in that condition.

What they said.

Decline, and ask her to cancel the transaction (so you don't loose your wishlist position).

Jeez, just when I thought I'd heard everything. I was thinking exactly what Rick said. It's the same as a book with a stack of pages torn out. What the hell is the point of that?

Yes, please do explain to this person that this is in no way acceptable, personal tags cannot be used on general book listings, and report it.

Would anyone actually have to read the rules here to even know something like this would be unpostable?

It's just downright inconsiderate.

I'd report it to PBS.

Personal book tags are okay, according to the help center, but a tag like this crosses the line into "inappropriate."  The following is several exerpts from the "tags" help doc:

An Inappropriate tag is one that describes a particular copy of a book, or that is scatalogical (these are never appropriate!), or that actually impedes other members' use of the club.  See examples of Inappropriate tags.

Examples of Inappropriate Tags:

cover has small tear, No Dust Jacket, some yellowed pages, autographed, etc.

These tags apply do not apply to EVERY copy of the book, only one.

Do not order

Put yourself in the shoes of a new member who finds a book she'd like to order bearing this tag!

Posted for John S. only - all other requests will be canceled!

Egregious inappropriate use of tags (and of the site)! This tag appears to apply to every copy of the book, so no one will request it. A tag like this will also likely get your account suspended for Terms of Use violations.

If you have created any inappropriate tags, you should delete them. Otherwise, they will start to disappear without warning as other members report them as inappropriate! See below for more information about reporting tags as inappropriate.

How do I report other members' tags as inappropriate ?

  • Every tag that wasn't created by you will have an  symbol at the end of the tag. Clicking this symbol will report the tag as inappropriate.
  • After a certain number of members have reported the tag for that particular book, it will be automatically deleted from that book only. This allows members to get rid of tags that are inappropriate for a certain book without removing it from other books where it may be appropriate.
  • You will only be able to report a particular tag as inappropriate once per book.
  • Please use good judgment when reporting tags. Abuse of this feature may result in losing your ability to use or even see tags. Repeated abuse can result in your account being suspended.
