Do you remember what book first scared you and got you hooked on horror books?

When I was 12 or 13, I read "The Dollhouse Murders" by Betty Ren Wright.  I never had nightmares but I remember being scared to look under the bed in case one of my dolls was under there.

The Omen.  Rosemary's Baby would be a close second.

Salem's Lot  (probably because the movie scared the crap out of me when i was little) then I was hooked on Stephen King, I still haven't read all of "It"  by Stephen King because I can't get the thought of the at horrible clown out of my head at night.  & then  Intensity-Dean Koonts got me later...

It was the first book I was allowed to get in the "adult" aisle of my local library.  It was Burnt Offerings by Robert Marasco and it made a huge impression on me as a kid - especially when compared to the mild Nancy Drew books I usually read.

I don't know if it counts as a horror, but years ago I read "Alien" and couldn't sleep in my bed (which is under a vent) until the book was finished and the alien was killed.  I haven't seen the movie, but I've seen all the following movies of the series.  At the time I read the book, though, I had only seen "Aliens," and that, "Predator" and "Jaws" were about as scary as movies and things could be for me.  Ahh, fond memories...  Anyways, that was the first book to scare me.

The Turn of the Screw, by Henry James. I read the book and saw the movie with Deborah Kerr, and have never forgotten either. Not too long after that, I read In Cold Blood, by Capote, which is truly chilling.

It's not horror at all, but I remember reading Robert Heinlein's science fiction story Tunnel in the Sky late at night as a youngster and thought it was terrifying...these little harmless-looking creatures on the alien world go berserk and start attacking anything in their path and kill with sheer numbers.

Duma Key.  Since then I've read tens of SK books.  He truly is the master of horror.
