"I am interested in mercy, and not sacrifice" so says the Lord. We know this line from the Bible, and we understand its meaning. What Would Jesus Do (Sheldon) shows us just how to do that. It is interesting to me to take an ideal and craft a series of narrative events around it, to amplify the main point. Christ used parables, today's writers use daily situations to teach moral imperatives. The book showed the basic societal disconnect between the haves and the have nots in our suburban churches. The minister in the tale attended to the spiritual and social needs of his church, while those suffering absolute economic disaster and terror could only look into the designer, stained glass windows of the pristine church. When faced with the reality of showing mercy to one of God's children, the minister blinked. It seemed the church leader could not recognize the needs of all of his flock. The language was easy to understand, and the story line moved well though the book. However, in a short time, it was easy to see the linear projection or arc of the tale. I was hoping for something along the line of "What Would Buddha Do?" or something in that vein. I looked for situation/resolution with kindness as the common denominator. I did not find what I was hoping for here. This is a feel good type story, and could be shared with your teen children or grandchildren.

This is a contemporary retelling of the classic Christian novel "In His Steps" by Charles M. Sheldon. It is actually written by his great-grandson.

"For almost a century, Charles M. Sheldon's In His Steps has been one of the most beloved Christian novels ever. Now his great-grandson, Dr. Garrett W. Sheldon, brings a contemporary retelling of the story to a new generation.

In What Would Jesus Do? Dr. Sheldon uses updated characters and settings to shed a new and inspiring light on the question, "Just how Christ-like are you willing to be?"

Sheldon's Pastor Maxwell puts this question to his modern day church and what happens as a result will have you asking some basic questions of yourself all over again:

Are you willing to truly surrender your life to follow in the footsteps of Jesus? Are you willing to stop substituting personal activities for personal involvement with people? Are you willing to sacrifice your convenience and work to aid and comfort others?

What Would Jesus Do? is a story of commitment and courage, a challenge to walk in faith and power and- most importantly- a reminder that individual acts of love are still the surest way to change lives and reach people for Christ."
