Have extended my deal until August 15th. I am almost ready for school to start! How about you?

Public School started here on Wednesday, and it is hard to keep my son busy without starting school.

I think next year I will plan our vacation in August so that we will be gone for a couple of weeks when school starts.

I like starting in September, I guess I'm a bit of a traditionalist. How about any of you? When do you start school?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
My books are going to be 5-1 until the end of the week....
Blessings
We school year-round, so we really don't have a "start date".  We also start, and finish, courses at different times in the year.  Typically, though, we work our way back into FT status, with a full course load, the first full week that DD has at PS.  She starts on the 20th, so the week of the 25th we'll "ramp up".  Co-op starts 9/5, so that's always a wake up call to get in gear w/ a new routine and course load!
We always have a "not-back-to-school" special event - just DS and me.  We do something special like go out to lunch at his favorite place, visit the zoo w/o the school kids, etc.  Our local HS group always has a big "shindig" also with inflatable games, regular outdoor games, etc.  It's a great way for new HS'ers to meet and mingle with others.
We started in mid-July.  We start in the summer when it is really hot because there isn't much else to do in this heat.  I also like to take a long break around the holidays.  Once Thanksgiving rolls around, we will lighten our load a lot.
We will be starting on September 8.  This is his first year of homeschooling.  He already making noise about not wanting to go to school.  He has had a relaxed preschool schedule.  This year will have more schedules.  I joined him up for the local PE class at the YMCA to give him the experience of gym class.
I tried to get him warmed up with a few small unit studies.  One on leaves and it only brought on a tantrum at the park.  How did you introduce " home schooling " to your kid.  I have seen"starting kindergarten books at the library but it all based on bus trip and public school.
Good luck with your new year!
First of all Holly don't call it 'school'.  Just be like... 'come here honey I want to show you something...' and show him some letters etc.  Read books ... then tell him we're going to draw pictures about what we read and do a craft.  K should be short and fun.
Holly - my son attended a public school preschool program as a peer model (his sister was there as a 3 y.o. student).  He *hated* it because he knew everything already.  He could wait to *not* go to school.  :-)  So I had it easy, there.  He was so excited to HS that he asked me to start once our materials arrived in April, so we did - after he got home from preschool each day.
Have you figured out his learning style?  If not, you need to do so ASAP.  Then work your lessons around that style.  Think outside the box and if something doesn't work, don't be afraid to try something different.  You're going to have to establish boundaries.  If you don't this year, you'll "lose him".
I loved all of your comments about school. What do we call it though if we do not say school? Or would that be only for Kindergarten?
I have a reluctant son who hates to start school and I really liked the idea of having something special to do first. We are not to hot this time of the year and so it will be fun to do a field trip into the forest or something. ... Thanks to all of you and your help for Holly too.
Our public school starts September 3rd. We will start that day as well since he has a Bible class that morning and a gymnastics class that afternoon anyway.
Hi everyone.. We started our school year on August 5th. That is when we got back from vacation. The kids and I like to get started in August so that we can be done in May...We don't take many breaks at all and in the summer we do workbooks to keep our skills sharp. Especially in math. August is usually a pretty slow month for us...Kathy
We'll start the first week of Sept.
We finished school late though in mid. June I think so the kids wanted a longer break. Plus with my health issues and being sick for so long (the whooping cough has gone from family member to family member since June.) it has taken me longer to get better.
I'm still in the planning phase but almost done.
