I really enjoyed this book. I would have given it 5 stars if sometimes I didn't become annoyed with the main character. It was good to see the interaction of many main characters I'd come to know thus far. This book moved the history of Pern forward in a fun, not sad, manner. Good writing.

This was my favorite of the Pern series as a boy. I bought it because I was enchanted by the cover, and started reading it only to discover that it was part of a series. So I went back and read the original two books before resuming this one. This was definitely my favorite, and I think that even now, many years later, this book still is one of my favorite books from any genre.
---Part of McCaffrey's best-selling DRAGONS OF PERN series---
Never had there been as close a bonding as the one that existed between the daring and adventurous young Lord Jaxom and his extraordinary white dragon, Ruth. Pure white and incredibly agile, Ruth was a dragon of many talents, though almost everyone on Pern thought he was a runt that would never amount to anything.
But Jaxom knew better, knew he could teach his dragon to fly and to destroy the deadly silver Threads that fell from the sky--if only his over-protective guardian would let him! Disobeying all rules, Jaxom and Ruth trained in secret. Their illicit flights seemed but a minor disobedience--until they found themselves in the path of danger and in a position to prevent the biggest disaster of all!
