This book was hard to get through. Clare is a contradiction and really hard to like. She is untrusting, skeptical and stubborn as hell. The second Jake starts talking to her she spills her guts. That didn't ring true for me after the way she is portrayed. Plus the way she treats everyone else makes her really hard to sympathize with. Jake is all alpha and has a dark side, I'm all for that, but his "you will do this, you will do that" instead of asking was too much. I liked the other character, Clare's sister and Dad try so hard to help her and be a part of her life, but she shuts them out. Plus there is a bunch of Arcane history that was hard to get through. The "relationship" between Clare and Jake was too forced, I didn't get any love from them.
As usual Jayne Ann Krentz has penned a winner! Jake and Clare are spectacular characters. She is a very strong psychic lie detector and feisty as hell. He is a very strong psychic hunter. You would think that they would clash like oil and water but oh no. The attraction is instant and the sex is explosive. The mystery of who killed Brad McAllister really keeps the story moving as there are lots of potential suspects. The attempts on both Jake's and Clare's lives indicate that they are getting close to figuring it out.
I really enjoyed the psychic aspects of this novel. The entire Arcane Society series is filled with wonderful characters who embark on interesting quests and find the mate of their dreams. HEA is always the outcome but the journey getting there is the fun part.
Great Story. This is an Arcane Society story. It is done in current times, unlike the previous one I read that was in England a hundred or two years ago. There is quite a great romance story mixed with suspense that will have you turning the pages.
