I understand that the red "W" means that book is on someone else's wish list and the green "W" with the small "a" means it is on someone's auto request but...why is it on my BIR list? All the books that have either of those designations have already been mailed off. If I don't have them anymore and can't mail them to anyone, why would I need to know that that title is on a WL somewhere?

It means the same thing.  Some people put all the books they've read on their BIR list even ones they've decided to keep.  So I guess it shows you that they're WL to encourage to you post some keepers into the WL system.
