Why is it necessary for the info one has in your "signature" area when posting to be updated whenever you change that info on your profile?
For ex, in my sig line, I list book I'm currently reading and the one or 2 I just finished. But when I update that, I see posts I made days or weeks ago change that section too! It makes sense for it to change for future posts, but not old ones. Can anyone explain? Seems like the programming would go crazy trying to find my last 863 posts to change my sig line!
Because they don't store the signature with each post. They store the signature only once, separately, and add it to the posts when the posts are displayed in your browser.
In other words, they store the posts that you have made once each, but only the words that you typed each time. And they store your signature once, too. And when someone requests to view a forun page, they go into the database and get the posts and the signatures and mix them together and put them up for viewing.
If they stored all that other info with each psot, the database would have to be twice as big, or even larger, considering all the images that people put into their avatars and signatures.
