John Fitzhugh Wyckerly is now the seventh Earl of Danecroft, due to the untimely death of his brother, and he is now faced with towering debts. In fact, the dear departed's (George Wyckerly) creditors had recently sued and won. The creditors were not amused when the butler points out the family vault, where the dear George lay instate. This is an engaging, suspenseful romance because someone is trying to knock Fitz's head off; Fitz doesn't know who or why.

Fitz is the second son and has earned his keep in London by gambling. Mathematics is Fitz's real skill, but he applies it at the gaming tables. Besides a bankrupt earldom, Fitz has just received responsibility for his illegitimate daughter, Penelope (a wild hoyden with a shocking vocabulary). He is buffaloed by both problems and then he meets Abigail Merriweather, who has recently lost her father and stepmother to death. Then the estate's solicitor took her four younger siblings away from her, saying they needed a 'father's influence.'

Fitz needs a wealthy heiress to recover his fortunes and Abby needs enough money to hire a solicitor to help her get her siblings back. They do not need each other. However, they are very attracted to each other but realize that 5 children and no money would be an awful pickle.

This book is very well-written and kept me turning the pages far into the night. I liked the secondary characters too; they were well-developed and interesting. The main characters really changed according to the challenges thrown at them (from all sides). I could hardly turn the pages fast enough to speed along with the story with loads of bumps in the road. The plotline started out with an earl needing an heiress -- and not getting her. Problems spin out of control until the author brings them all to a satisfying conclusion. Delightful reading.
