This new installment by Margo Maguire was a disappointment. I was just recently turned on to this author. I read her first book "The Bride Hunt" and even though there was parts I didn't agree with it was still a good read. Well this one revolves around a young man who was found living in Africa, who may be the lost Sutton heir. As a child, Anthony Maddox was lost in the sea when he went on a expedition with his father, Colin.
He is found and of course is reluctant to go and fights to stay where he felt most familiar. His grandmother, Sofia Sutton, needs to prove to the house of Lords that his "barbarian" is her grandson. She entrusts her companion Grace Hawthorne with the tasks. Of course, Grace is hesitant and doesn't believe the "savage" can be turned into a proper gentleman. Sofia doesn't see it that way and there lies the crux of the story.
What really turned me off of this story was Grace. She struck me as uppity and judgmental towards Anthony. She didn't try to understand his experiences and why he wanted to go back to a place where he felt he was comfortable. She threw words like "savage" and "barbarian" around like he was less than human. She has a bad break-up with a past suitor and from that experience she wanted to be the best person she could be. I didn't see it. I really don't know what Anthony saw in her that was even likable.
He saved this story for me. He was true to himself and demanded to maintain his independence from the stiff behavior of England...you know what Grace tries to adhere to.
The villian of this book was one-note and the side story involving him wasn't fleshed out so I really didn't care.
I might try this author again but it will be from a library or this website because I ain't wasting money on an unsure thing.
