On the Hana Coast of Maui, Lucia Gray, Great Granddaughter of a New England Missionary falls in love with Kaupena, a handsome paniolo (cowboy). Against the wishes of Kaupena's grandmother, a Hawaiian kahuna (priestess) who wishes him to suceed her, they marry. Their love has to overcome the pull of the supernatural, the clash between old Hawaiian beliefs and Western ideas, and the apprearance of kaupena's former lover.
