You can use the tag feature to sort them into groups like that.  Once you tag them I think you can then click on a category that you tagged one book with and pull up the others tagged with that category?  I haven't tried this yet myself but I think as time goes on we will have more uses for this feature.

But then doesn't everyone see the tags?

What I saw when browsing by genre I was not impressed. It made the books take up more screen space, but added nothing to my browsing. I shudder for when every book has 15 (10?) of them listed.

I can see why tagging might be useful, but I think having private/public tags would be very nice.   I know private ones will theoretically fall off--but not unless lots of other people tag it something else.

Yes, from what I understand everyone will see the 15 most common tags for each book, but you will continue to see your private tags as well.  So, at the beginning of tagging a large database like this you will see the private tags, but once a book is tagged many times the private tag will be outnumbered by the more general tags.  It will probably take a long time for this to happen here, in a larger database (I'm thinking Amazon) so many people will tag that the 15 most used ones for each book will be  representative of a lot of people so will be more accurate (or at least, more common).

I was wondering if it wouldn't help to agree on certain tags so people use the same terminology?  Or does it not matter because you'll be able to search by a single word and pick up any tag containing that word?  I don't know the answer to that.

Please don't put personal tags on books.  The tags are for everyone.

That is a cool idea about being able to separate our WL into categories though.

Here's what the help center says:

Why do I want to use them?
  • You can tag books for yourself if you like: "ordered for aunt martha" or "I hated this author"
  • You will see the tag when you view the book on your Bookshelf, in the database etc.
  • We will soon have a way to view tags on the site so that you can use them as another way to "search" for books you might be interested in reading.

The tags are intended for us to use WHATEVER way we want and that sure includes personal tags.  What would be the point of using them otherwise???

I personally think tags are more clutter on the site....but I guess they will have their uses.

ETA...I wish we could make them private or turn off the public ones.

I'm sorry; I stand corrected.  I thought the tags were there  to help with searching.    I can't even imagine what the clutter is going to look like if everyone puts personal tags on all of their books.
