This is a lovely middle-grade novel featuring a red oak tree and the world around it, both animals and humans. The tree is beloved in the neighborhood because every year on May 1, children and adults write wishes on pieces of paper or fabric and tie them in the tree's branches. When a new family moves into the neighborhood, a negative reaction triggers dire actions.

Themes of this book include the importance of family and welcoming others who may be different than us. I listened to the audiobook which was skillfully narrated by Nancy Linari, but then I missed the wonderful illustrations in the print editions of the book.
