The premise is that even long after the waves of immigration at the turn of the 20th Century, "Italian-Americans are still being victimized by prejudice and discrimination." The case is made by careful selection of insulting stories published over the years, caricatures, and unfair humor. However, LaGumina does provide support for the contention of today "that Italians in America are subject to some of the most scurrilous campaigns ever directed against any immigrant group." LaGumina is the editor of this popular treatment, but doesn't seem to have looked at the Italian language press. The remarks by the unlamented Senator Bilbo (D-Mississippi), responding to allegations he denigrated Italian-Americans, certainly help LaGumina make his point.
