Queen Mary was published in 1875, Harold in 1877, but both of these dramas have undergone changes in later editions, new lines being introduced, especially in the fifth act of Queen Mary, where the dialogue between Mary and Philip, in the first scene, has been enlarged by a striking passage, and a new introduction, with a subtle turn in it, made for the second scene. In a condensed and altered form Queen Mary was put on the stage at the Lyceum Theatre in London in 1876, with Miss Kate Bateman in the title role, and Mr. Irving in that of Philip II. The Cup, the story of which is founded on Plutarch's treatise De Claris Mulieribus, was produced at the Lyceum Theatre in 1881, with Mr. Irving and Miss Terry in the principal parts. The Falcon, suggested by a story of Boccaccio's, was produced at the St. James Theatre, London, in 1879, with Mrs. Kendal as the Lady Giovanna. Longfellow had used the same story in The Student's Tale of The Falcon of Ser Federigo, in Tales of a Wayside Inn. The Cup and The Falcon were published in 1884 DRAMATIS PERSONS. Queen Mary.
