Written in Ink by Sara Davison is my favorite type of Christian fiction: novels that explore real-life situations that are important, controversial, and "messy." TW: abortion, child abuse, brief mention of suicide.
These characters have tattoos, have premarital sex, commit murder for the sake of a "righteous" cause, and contemplate ending a pregnancy via abortion. The sex and pregnancy topics involve characters who have no connections to a faith system when they are introduced, but through the story arc, they seek out people who share their beliefs in very practical, down-to-earth ways. There's no condemnation for past behavior, simply the possibility of a happier, more peaceful life through a relationship with God. I felt every aspect of Renee and Cash's relationship rang true, from his respect for her autonomy in making the decision about the abortion to the novel's conclusion.
Written in Ink is the second book in The Rose Tattoo Trilogy. I didn't read the first but had a good sense of its story as the author recapped the major events in this second installment of the series. This is the second Davison novel I've read, and I truly appreciate her ability to write gritty Christian fiction so well.
