In the early morning hours of July 7, 1977, a twenty-four-year-old Yale graduate named Richard Herrin picked up a hammer and, with four brutal blows, crushed the skull and larynx of his twenty-year-old girlfriend, herself a Yale student. Within hours the girl died and Herrin, confessing the killing, was charged with murder.
