i've only read some of the stories in this book, but it's a great collection featuring some of the masters of fantasy (which i'm still new to) like ursula k. le guin and poul anderson.
For once the hype on the cover tells the truth! This collection is as fine a fantasy collection as I've ever found.
Le Guin's Earthsea tale of the founding of the school on Roke wanders and wanders, and then takes you to exactly where you need to go. Andy Duncan suggests what might happen in Tolkien's Shire many years after the Tale of the Ring. Charles de Lint's Littles have another adventure. Kage Baker describes a truly dysfunctional family, and a resolution of its problems...
And more, and more--all good. The story by Uncle River, well, where do you think forgotten Objects of Power might go and what they might do?
From back cover: Undreamed-of wonders from the farthest reaches of imagination!
In this second volume of the previous year's finest short fantastic fiction, acclaimed editor and anthologist David G. Hartwell showcases new works by stellar literary artists--acknowledged masters of the genre and exceptionally talented newcomers alike. Astonishing worlds come alive in these pages-realms of strange creatures and remarkable sorceries, as well as twisted shadow versions of our inhabited earthly plain. A bold and breathtaking compendium of tales--including a new Earthsea story from the incomparable Ursula K. Le Guin.
YEAR'S BEST FANTASY 2 is the state-of-the-art of a unique and winning genre, offering unforgettable excursions into new realities wondrous, bizarre, enchanting... and terrifying.
