Patrolman Max Smith sees an elk caught up in barbed wire. As he struggles to release the elk, he notices the eight-pointed rack. It is a monarch elk, a sight he has never seen before ! Max is thrilled.
He notices a second elk nearby. It is a cow-elk, the monarch's loyal partner, his mate of many years.
An extraordinary story is under way. For the monarch and his mate adopt a camel calf that has been abandoned by its mother under curious circumstances. And together, this unlikely trio makes its way from northern Montana into Idaho and south, to the safety of Yellowstone National Park...
...It is understandable that Max would want to follow them. In doing so, he involves not only the Montana Highway Patrol but his family as well in the fun. The episodes with Barton Striekelosky and his circus of performing camels add to the hilarity. Here is enough humor and comedy to tickle anyone's fancy. And a touching and remarkable journey.
