Book Description:

The phenomenal New York Times bestselling author Elizabeth Lowell brilliantly displays her incomparable talents in a story of treachery, greed, conspiracy, and murder that will hold the reader spellbound until the final word.

It is the opportunity of a lifetime for Kate Chandler, the chance to cut seven rare, priceless sapphires and solidify her reputation as a world-class jewel cutter. But something goes tragically wrong during the transfer of goods. The sapphires vanish without a trace. Missing also is the man Kate trusted to transport the gems, her half-brother Lee, who now quite possibly is dead. Suddenly, she is on the run, pursued by federal agents who suspect her of being the criminal mastermind of a cunning bait-and-switch scheme.

Special Agent Sam Groves, an essential member of the FBI's elite strike force, could never be scammed by a beautiful confidence woman. But something is troubling about this assignment: someone else is chasing Kate Chandler as well. Kate suspects the awful truth: she has stumbled into a conspiracy that goes far beyond a simple jewel heist. Getting Groves, her constant shadow, to believe her is a step in the right direction -- because the order has already been passed down to a ruthlessly efficient assassin: Kate Chandler must not be allowed to live ...

While I don't enjoy Lowell contemporaries as much as her historicals, this was a great fast paced read.

"A fast-moving story that unfolds in the glamorous, greed-driven subculture of the gemstone trade...Lowell writes sharp, tough dialogue, even in her love scenes...Readers will approach the jewelry counter with new eyes!"

I read this because of the subject matter- I'm a jeweler. It was OK. The tech stuff was interesting but not entirely accurate from a jeweler point of view; still, it did a good job of providing atmosphere and a bit of mostly accurate info about the gem trade.

I am in love with how well Lowell can combine suspense, drama, comedy and romance to come up with a great read (again...). Like any of her novels, you'll be hooked from the beginning!

This is a wonderful book. Diologue seems real, an enormous amount of research went into it(at least it seems like it(who new gems could be so interesting?)), well paced. Excellent. Some books make you want to go out and get every book an author has ever written. This is one of those. If you like good mysteries, you will not be bored reading this book.

Kate Chandler has accepted a commission that will solidify her reputation as a world-class gem cutter. But during what should have been a simple transfer, seven rare, priceless sapphires vanish without a trace, along with their courier, her brother Lee, who now, quite possibly , is dead.

Kate Chandler is a world-class gem cutter. She cuts 7 stones that are rare and priceless and during a transfer to the owner they dissappear along with the courier who happens to be her brother. Kate is sure her brother is dead and the stones hijacked. Entering into a world of deceit, betrayal and cold-blooded murder, Kate tries to find out the truth. She finally gets an FBI agent to believe her and the race is on to find the killer before Kate's life is snuffed out.
I enjoyed the story line except for the jumping around from character to character in telling the story. Sort of made it confusing. Other wise a very good read.
