I like this author, but this book was disturbing to me. There's a difference between suspense and a sense of impending doom, & I only felt the latter. I could never quite figure out why the hero & heroine were so mad for each other & ready to risk everything to be together. I felt no sympathy or empathy for an impetuous, spoiled drama queen. And if revenge was the motivation for the wronged war hero to steal back his heritage, why did he sell it off as soon as he got it back? I guess it didn't mean that much to him after all. I found myself speed reading through the last 1/3 of the book just to get it over with. Sorry, ladies, but this one did nothing for me - maybe you'll get more out of it.

No, it wasn't perfect, and no, it's not staying on my Keeper Shelf, but this story does have some meat to it and in the end, it was a satisfying read and certainly held my attention.
I was relieved to see the main characters transform into likable adults. They were completely UNlikeable in the beginning. Hang in there, though, the ride does get smoother and the journey's end is worth it.

Overall, I thought this was a promising start to a new series. Sullivan and Isabel aren't the prototypical perfect hero and heroine, but (thank goodness) they exhibit *actual character development* throughout the story. Isabel is obnoxious and a little hard to stomach for the first few chapters, but she improves upon further acquaintance. Sullivan is a pretty bitter person to begin with, but he's started to put the worst of his issues behind him by the end of the book. And I'm kind of hoping Isabel's younger brother gets his own book at some point - he was fairly enjoyable.

I have not liked everything Ms. Enoch writes, but this was very good. The story is well written, characters that you like right away and the secondary characters are great too.

It was hard to like the heronine in this book, although she does grow as a person in the book the leap from where she "was" to where she "ends" is to fast to fit within the story. In my opinion she should have started out less haughty to make the growth more believeable. There really isn't much of a plot/suspense to the story itself but it is still an ejoyable read.
