Sister & Brother brings together thirty deeply personal narratives of loving camaraderie between gay men and lesbians. Historically, lesbians and gay men have inhabited a common forbidden zone of sexuality, especially in smaller towns where there aren't enough gathering places to allow for the gender separation in larger cities. Belying the stereotypes of butch dykes scorning sissies, and misogynistic queens turning up their noses at Minty and Marge, these true stories tell of complex and special best-friendships and mentorings, from rough days in fifties bars to a house share in eighties Northampton, Massachusetts.
Is it possible for gay men and lesbian women to be friends? This book answers that question with a very big YES. Many various stories from real life people who answer that question, each in their individual ways. Some friendships are long lasting, some were a moment in time, but all are very relevant. This is a book that will definitely stay in my personal library because it affirms friendships between men and women. It affirms my friendships with my gay men friends and in some ways is a great resource on how to 'be' in those friendships.
