Camille Montgomery is aware of the wicked man's reputation. But as an expert in antiquities, she also knows his family's Egyptian artifacts are the finest in England. The problem is, her wayward stepfather knows this, too -- and he's determined to steal them. So when he's caught in the act of robbing the so-called Beast of Carlyle, Camille must swallow her fear and boldly confront the man whose mask is said to hide a face too loathsome to behold.
The Earl of Carlyle has lived in the shadows ever since the suspicious death of his parents. But he's never stopped trying to unravel the mystery behind what he suspects to have been their murder. And now that the lovely Camille has stumbled into his life, he has the perfect pawn for his deadly game of vengeance and deceit. But in laying his ruthless trap, will he risk losing his own heart?
This is an enigmatic romance book that keeps you in suspense throughout its pages. The mystery is as enjoying to follow as the blossoming attraction between the two main characters. And there are many tantalizing peeks into the world of the supernatural. In all, I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

I ordered this book based on the reviews of other members. I was a little disappointed when I realized the book was a Harlequin, but I couldn't have been more pleasantly surprised. It was a great story, with enough twists to keep me saying, "just one more chapter." I love the Beauty and the Beast theme.

Picked this book up as a "quick romance break"...whoa was I surprised! This is a great mystery...has everything you could want...castles, mummies, museums, a man who wears a mask and a "you won't believe it ending".
Okay. Good plot, poor writing. A mask wearing man whos parents are killed by asps.

This was my first book by this author, and I was not overly impressed. I think that Drake was going for a Gothic tone, but what she ended up with was a collection of very earnest characters who seem to favor long-winded, overly dramatic descriptive (and repetitive) dialogue.
The story concerns two mis-matched characters who fall in love, and loosely follows a Beauty and the Beast theme. They and most of the secondary characters are not-so-subtly fixated on gender and class differences in Victorian England. The story ties in some really interesting stuff about early British excavation of Ancient Egypt, but that was dragged down by everything else in the book. Which is too bad, because the plot itself had a lot of potential. Not sure I'd recommend using a valuable credit on this one.

I really enjoyed this book. It was a nice read that had a bit more depth than a traditional romance paperback. The characters were warm and even with two toddlers around me (we have family reading time) I still was able to get completely engrossed in the book.
