I really liked this book - more than I though I would, actually. It held a lot of information, though _Cast in Fury_ is still my favorite of the series, this one is up there. I loved the shadowstorm and its strange effects! They were very exciting. And Nightshade's character is still my favorite... I want more of him. And Severn is increasingly not a character that I like to read about at all... I can't wait to read the next book! I think that this one was the most suspenseful of the series, which is extra-frustrating since I don't think that there is even a release date for the sixth book!

This 5th book of the series went a little slower than the previous, not because of the story, but because of the complicated path it pursued and the difficulty of remembering events from other books that it links to. As Kaylin Neya is patrolling the city, she meets with someone from her past who threatens to destroy her current life by exposing her shameful secrets. But dark shadows of evil and destruction threaten the city, and in order to combat them, Kaylin is ordered to enter the fief of Barren, the very place she has tried so hard to forget. In the company of her faithful corporal Severn and the Dragon Lord Tiamaris, she faces darkness and magic that threaten to overwhelm her and her world's very survival.

This story was more surreal even than the second book of the series, Cast in Courtlight, but though it was a bit of a struggle to understand the supernatural forces that Sagara has woven into her world, it's well worth it. Kaylin's character has grown much since the first book, with more room for further development in this fascinating and unique fantasy series.

Overall, my feeling are mixed. I love this author. I think that this book is very well written, especially in terms of world building, actual writing style and characters. I will keep reading to find out how things play out for Kaylin, however, with the repeated problems in understanding the dialogue and with how Kaylin's character is treated, my enthusiasm for this series is dropping. I hope the next installment renews it.
