Book Description:
Ghastly new home.
Potentially adulterous husband . . .
Not quite the fresh start in the country she was promised.
A fixer-upper in the sticks was the last place city girl Ro Skews expected to live. But her husband, Marcus, wants it -- and all the arguments are on his side, namely a better life for Tod, their wonderboy, who has developed social problems in London. Of course, the five-year-old has never been the most... conventional child.
While Ro (grudgingly) makes a life for herself in stuffy Chetsley (if you can count reaping the whirlwind of floor sanding and playing Suburban Lawn Warfare with her sexy neighbor as a life), Marcus starts spending more nights in the city with his cell phone switched off. And Tod, whose fascination with mazes seems to have blossomed into a full-blown obsession, treads the worrying line between eccentric and problematic.
Ro searches for the right path in a few mazes of her own -- her marriage, motherhood, country customs -- but when she unearths a shattering secret, more than one truth is revealed and Ro is left wondering: Is the country any place to raise a family?

I gave this book a chance...but about 100 pages in, I gave up. The tone of the book seemed almost whiny, and I couldn't get myself to care much about the characters. This might be OK if there's nothing else around to read...not exactly a resounding endorsement, I know.

A pleasant-enough read, but some conflicts get resolved a little too neatly. But it IS a Red Dress Ink book, so perhaps that is to be expected. I enjoyed it, but I wouldn't say I loved it.

Rowena Skews isn't thrilled with the idea of leaving her London home for a house in the country, but her husband, Marcus, is convinced their young son, Tod, will fare better there. Five-year-old Tod is clever and observant but doesn't socialize well, so Ro hopes that he'll have more friends at one of the country schools. But when Ro and her family arrive at Gorby Cottage, she finds it's going to need a lot of work to look presentable. Ro also hoped the move would bring her and Marcus closer, but her handsome husband seems more distant than ever. When Ro hears him murmur the name "Sarah" in his sleep, she begins to fear he is being unfaithful to her. And Ro herself is drawn to her sexy next-door neighbor, Joe, who helps her out when her car breaks down. Young mothers facing suburban life for the first time will especially enjoy reading about Ro's attempts to adjust to life outside of the big city.

For this dyed in the wool city mom, life in the country is no walk in the park. Enjoyable read.
