This morning I finished my read of the J. D. Robb (Nora Roberts) book, Origin In Death, I picked up in a swap with another PBS member. I liked it. A rollicking good sci-fi treatment of a multiple murder mystery that eventually dredges up the old/new issue of cloning. Mary Shelly's Frankenstein is mentioned by the lead characters, Lieutenant Eve Dallas and her wealthy husband, Roarke, but not Ira Levin's Boys From Brazil, though clearly both those earlier tales figure in the genesis of this one. I was a little trepidacious about the read at first, given my familiarity with Roberts from back in my RWA days, and during the first few chapters I found my fears justified as all of the characters introduced proved to be just too-too beautiful, just too-too perfect. I was sure this would turn out to be a bit of cotton-candy fluff ala Clive Cussler and his ilk and not at all suited to my banana split tastes where escapism is concerned. But I was wrong. Roberts seems unable to leave that romance genre habit of creating characters just too wonderful for words, but she is an accomplished writer and it shows as she puts those characters into real enough situations to make them believable. She’s no Thomas Harris where police procedurals are concerned, but she does a remarkable job with that part of her tale, grabbing the reader with enough detail to ‘make it real’. This is the 22nd book in the Eve Dallas series so perhaps one has little room to complain about the annoying acronyms (LC, NYPSD, EDD) or jargon (Free-Agers, off-planet) that pepper the text, none of which are spelled out at any point, but presumably would be clear to anyone who’d read the earlier works. Bottom line for me...it was a darn good read and I’ll be on the lookout for more.

The bookstore sold this book already autographed!
I love powerful Lt. Eve Dallas and how the complex New York City crimes are solved. If you don't wanna bite her husband, don't read these books! Nora Robert's best writing is as JD Robb in this "In Death" series of some 30+ stories to date. I collect all of the JD Robb books, but skip the Roberts, whose stories are not as tight as those about Lt. Eve Dallas - ass kicker! If the future of New York City is like this, I fear these futuristic killers who are sneaky and complex.
Scifi and mystery - thriller and romance novel. No one does it better than J.D. Robb aka Nora Roberts. In this novel, set in 2059 in New York City, Detective Eve Dalls tracks the cunning cold-blooded killer of a father and son team who have devoted their lives to reconstructive and cosmetic surgery. Their records are clean, not even a parking ticket betweeen them and that's too clean for Dallas. She knows there's something hidden that resulted in double homicide. While her husband Roarke works behind the scenes, Dallas follows her darkest instincts into the victims' pasts. What she discovers are men driven to create perfection, playing fast and loose with the laws of nature, the limits of science and the morals of humanity.
Great read as always with J.D. Robb
Eve goes up against the biggest case ever. She finds herself in vestigating two doctors who are involved with cloning.

Very good, like all of her "In Death" series!
A novel in the futuristic series! A pioneer of modern reconstructive and cosmetic surgery, Dr. Wilfred B. Icove, is found dead in his office---murdered in a chilling efficient manner: one swift stab to the heart. Struck by the immaculate condition of the crime scene, Dallas suspects a professional killing. Security disks show a stunningly beautiful woman clamly entering and leaving the building---the doctor's final appointment. A combinaion of futuristic seting, suspense, and romance.
Another mystery by JD Robb
