Kathryn Lasky presents a credible portrait of Marie Antoinette as a girl struggling to hold onto her own, unique identity in a world of royal duty and rigid etiquette. I wished the book had shown more of Antoinette's inner feelings as she left her native Austria forever to become a French princess. However, the novel provided a good introduction to the tragic queen's life.

Unlike "The Hidden Diaries of Marie Antoinette" which took us from the time of childhood to the Queen's execution, "Marie Antoinette: Princess of Versailles, Austria-France, 1769" takes us from her childhood in Austria to her childhood in France as the Dauphine. While I felt it was cut short -- as there is so much more history of the Dauphin and Dauphine than what the book portrayed -- it was interesting to read Marie Antoinette's life from a young girl's point of view. Imagine spending days in an Empire, clueless to the common world outside, and being so young and chosen to rule a country! This book cut out the tragedy and replaced it with innocence.

Describes the life of Marie Antoinette as she first arrives to her new French life and family and husband. Very descriptive and entertaining!

Quick read. Great way to learn history. I especially enjoyed the historical notes and pictures at the end of the novel.
