Book Description:
After Kendall Deaton pulls herself and her baby out of a wrecked car, a mixture of courage and terror gets her to the top of a ravine, where she flags down help. But she doesn't dare give the hospital her real name or the true identity of the car's injured driver. She tells them only that he is her husband. And as quickly as she can, she starts to plan their escape. Kendall's nightmare began when she came to Prosper, South Carolina, to be the best public defender the country ever had.

She quickly fell in love with Prosper's most eligible bachelor, and after a whirlwind courtship had a fairy-tale perfect wedding. Her father-in-law made her feel like part of the family, the kind of close, loving family she had always dreamed could be hers. When she became pregnant, Kendall's happiness seemed complete. She never suspected that coming to Prosper had plunged her into the midst of a chilling conspiracy of bigotry and hate or that she had become a player in an abhorrent deception. Soon Kendall starts losing cases she should have won.

She feels surrounded by whispers and secrets, fear, and frightened eyes. Finally Kendall becomes a witness to a horrifying crime. With shocking clarity she realizes that she has misjudged the people around her. Worst of all, she has confused the happiness she wanted so badly with the nightmare she is now forced to endure -- a precarious existence that will keep her on the run until justice prevails in Prosper... and until her child is safe.

I think this was one of Sandra Brown's best! The twists and turns keep you reading longer than you should. And the heroine has a backbone we would all desire.

Loved it! It was complicated enough to keep me interested and guessing. It's terrifying and sweet at the same time. I would definately recommend it. After reading it all in one day (that's how much I enjoyed it), I gave my copy to a friend.

Cheap, easy read. Not particularly believable, but good airplane material. Didn't like the way it used images of genuine atrocities to get you emotionally involved in an otherwise vacuous plot.

Annotation
The 16-time New York Times bestselling superstar presents her new blockbuster--a suspenseful tale of deception, passion, and murder. A brave young woman risks her own life and that of her unborn child to turn state's witness against her white supremacist ex-husband and father-in-law.

BookList
Kendall Deaton wants to be the best public defender the town of Prosper, South Carolina, has ever seen. She figures her dream is in the bag; she is married to the handsome newspaper editor, her father-in-law is a well-respected and popular man in the community, and the downtrodden of Prosper need a devoted advocate. What Kendall doesn't expect, though, is a town so entrenched in bigotry and "perfection" that she soon becomes the enemy, even to her new family. The book opens as Kendall pulls herself from the wreckage of a serious car accident. In the hospital, Kendall is careful not to disclose the true past of the seriously injured male driver; she tells the hospital personnel that he's her husband, and even though he's suffering from amnesia, he knows it is not true. Brown unfolds the story by alternating between the present and the past, keeping the reader guessing what's what all along. Though not an elegant writer, this prolific author writes a true page-turner that is recommended for fans of graphic crime fiction.

At first, I wasn't sure I was going to like this book. But after the first chapter, I was hooked. I really couldn't put it down. It's a page turner!

Although I enjoyed the story and the romance a great deal, I have difficulty suspending disbelief for the final chapters. Woman discovers her husband is guilty of heinous crimes and goes on the run. A marshall is dispatched to take her into protective custody.
