Small Southern towns hold a lot of secrets and this one is no exception; what I know I am going to like most about this series is that the main characters are not youngsters and life is somehow real--yes, some characters have old money, but most are just hard-working honest people like the ones I grew up around in my small Southern town. The first two books in the series were not at the library but even starting mid-stream, I am now searching the rest of the volumes. Yes, each seem to be able to stand on their own, but this is a group of people I want to visit over and over again.
Excellent first book in this series starring MacLearen Yarborough. I would highly recommend it!
What a great series. Another great book. If you enjoy folksy reading, this series is for you.

3rd book in the Thouroughly Southern Mystery series about Maclaren Yarbrough and others in the small town of Hopemore, GA which is a small town, but never a dull moment.

Mystery with a twist of humor.
From back cover:
Judge MacLaren Yarbrough is the new magistrate of Hope County, Georgia - appointed to replace her husband. Joe Riddley, after he receives an injury. But when a local man is found murdered at Joe's birthday gala, MacLaren almost ends up on the wrong side of the law. And when she finds clues that hit too close to home, this savvy Southerner becomes determined to uncover the roots of the crime - and clear her family's name.
MacLaren tires to sweet-talk clues out of affluent matriarchs, shady drifters, and even a disgruntled parrot. But all her efforts simply raise more questions: How many questions can one small town hold? Which party guest had the strongest motive? And...Who Invited the Dead Man?

great cozy series
This is a pleasant view of small-town southern life, featuring the feed-and-nursery-store-running wife of a southern magistrate. Unfortunately, in the last book, her husband was shot and is still recuperating, so she's now the magistrate. The mystery is cozy but not too cozy and the story hangs together well.

Although I am reading this series out of order, I find the characters delightful. The big "surprise" in this book was evident before the end but didn't spoil the book for me.
A magistrate in a Southern town replacing her injured husband, MacLaren Yarbrough solves murder, connects with her family and townspeople. A cozy.
Great Southern comfort read--familiar characters and a happy ending for all!
