Ajax Petrakos, ancient Spartan and now immortal warrior has waited 2500 years to meet his promised soul mate - Shayanna Angel. He has finally found her on the streets of modern day Savannah, GA. The only problem is - someone else has found her first.

Shayanna Angel has no idea who or what she *really* is until the day she sees demons at her mothers funeral. Now the monsters that stalk the night are stalking her and Ajax's worst enemy leads them.

I loved the idea of ancient Spartan warriors protecting mankind. Definitely a twist on the immortal warrior angle. Shay's sexy, totally Southern outlook on life was a breath of fresh air in a genre that of late has been very predictable. I'm looking forward to reading the next chapter in this series!

I wanted to like this book, but I just couldn't get into it. It just went on & on. The characters were boring & so was the plot. I love her other series so I thought this would be just as good - wrong. Hopefully she'll start writing for her Parallel series soon!

The story here had such potential, but frankly really did not live up to it. The worldbuilding felt stilted and incomplete- the attempted complexity reminded me of the Dark-Hunter books, except that the mythos here was developed in half of one volume instead of over the course of the entire series. I wanted so badly to like the characters but found that they weren't developed enough for this, and several storylines vied for my attention so it was hard to know what was important and what wasn't.

Another thing that bothered me was that there wasn't really any explanation for why the characters did the things that they did. I'm not someone who has to know every contributing factor to why the bad guy does what he/she does or needs every iota of detail spelled out and organized, but in this book the bad guys dropped in, blabbed for a few pages about something to advance the plot, and left! It was like the story was added as an afterthought and a distant one at that.

I don't know if I'll read any more books in this series, right now I feel like there are so many good PNRs out there that continuing with a series that got off to as flawed a start as this one might be a waste of time.

I picked up this book because I love Greek Mythology, and it has a different spin for a paranormal romance. Shay is a great, spunky, spitfire of a character. And Ajax is the characteristically brooding male, who, if he wasn't such a great Spartan warrior, would just seem like a pouting immortal. But the two of them are a funny pair. Their story takes an unusual path, and Ajax has some baggage to work through before he lets Shay in. The story started off kind of confusing, the world building took some getting used to. And i did skim through some slow parts of the book without missing any of the plot. Shay's brothers seemed out of place, and not really necessary to the series, but maybe they will in the future. I don't really get the whole "demon" part of the story, but I'm sure it will develop further on in the series. It wasn't slow enough to make me put the book down, and I really enjoyed the story as a whole. Now that Shay has discovered her true destiny, I'm looking forward to reading the rest of this series. The Oracle, Leonides, and River have some unanswered story lines. And we have 6 more Spartan's to read about! It's not a pre-order kind of series for me, but I will wish list it.

I found author Knight's concept for Red Fire intriguing, and because the story and premise really are fascinating, and there are some interesting characters and events in here. In particular the Delphic Oracle is a refreshing and fascinating character that single-handedly makes the prophecy end of things halfway reasonable. But there are too many aspects of the writing and characterization that didn't sit well with me, and too many plot aspects that felt arbitrary, random, or all-too-convenient for the author..

Shay has some real potential with her emerging `huntress' powers along with her hidden legacy, but it isn't really explored or exploited here - maybe in future books?

The bottom line is that, even though I had quite a few issues with Red Fire, I will probably give Knight's Spartans one more try when River's book comes out - there is still hope for the series if Knight can work past her series' birthing pains.
