Book Description:

Odd Thomas thinks of himself as an ordinary guy, if possessed of a certain measure of talent at the Pico Mundo Grill and rapturously in love with the most beautiful girl in the world, Stormy Llewellyn. Maybe he has a gift, maybe it's a curse, Odd has never been sure, but he tries to do his best by the silent souls who seek him out. Sometimes they want justice, and Odd's otherworldly tips to Pico Mundo's sympathetic police chief, Wyatt Porter, can solve a crime. Occasionally they can prevent one. But this time it's different.
A mysterious man comes to town with a voracious appetite, a filing cabinet stuffed with information on the world's worst killers, and a pack of hyena-like shades following him wherever he goes. Who the man is and what he wants, not even Odd's deceased informants can tell him. His most ominous clue is a page ripped from a day-by-day calendar for August 15.
Today is August 14.
In less than twenty-four hours, Pico Mundo will awaken to a day of catastrophe. As evil coils under the searing desert sun, Odd travels through the shifting prisms of his world, struggling to avert a looming cataclysm with the aid of his soul mate and an unlikely community of allies that includes the King of Rock 'n' Roll. His account of two shattering days when past and present, fate and destiny converge is the stuff of our worst nightmares--and a testament by which to live: sanely if not safely, with courage, humor, and a full heart that even in the darkness must persevere.

I had almost given up on Koontz. A friend recommended this book based on my love of the subject matter and I am so glad she did!! The story could have been taken in so many unnatural directions or given a hokey ending (if written by any other "horror" writer), but it starts strong and stays that way through the end. I swallowed it whole, finishing it in about 4 hours. I adore this book!

A very well written narrative of Dean Koontz character Odd Thomas. In this book, the first of the Odd Thomas series, we catch a glimpse into the life of Odd Thomas and his special abilities. I recommend this book to anyone that is a fan of Dean Koontz, the supernatural, or anyone just curious for a good read. Despite the somewhat spooky undertones, this book is surprisingly light-hearted and thought provoking.

Great book, loved this story, I'm already started on the next....There is nothing better than finding a good quirky series like this and knowing you have several good books ahead of you!

An odd endearing book about a young man with special psychic powers. Odd is his name, not just an adjective, but like Garp, it fits. There are now 2 more "Odd" books, but definitely read this one first.

Amanda B. (This is, without a doubt, one of the best books that Dean Koontz has ever written. I was moved to tears reading it. I have been reading Koontz on and off since the early 90's, and haven't been impressed with much that he's done in the last decade. This books reveals a new, improved Koontz. I couldn't put it down, and for the first time in a long time, I felt like the relationship between the main characters worked. It still has that trademark Koontz humor and quirkiness, but it's the intensity is more subtle and heartfelt. This is not one to miss.

One of my all-time favorites by Koontz. Odd Thomas, a nondescript short-order cook at the Pico Mundo Grill, is an unlikely hero with a gift. Odd's charming self-effacing humor is engaging and the dialog throughout the book is cleverly written. The contrast between Odd's honesty and purity and the evil he often faces was dramatically defined. Odd Thomas is an impressive introduction to a remarkable character and well worth the read. Odd's character is so palpable, I never wanted the book to end!

Odd Thomas is no exception. Probably one of his most likable characters to date, and that is saying a lot. Although I enjoyed the book from the beginning, I don't think I became emotionally invested until somewhere in the middle. It creeps up on you. Then all of a sudden you find yourself scared that something bad will happen to Odd, or to one of his friends.
I can't really comment too much on this book without giving something away, which I abhor doing. Once again Koontz takes us out of the mainstream, and makes up his own rules along the way. Read it for yourself, but make sure you have the other 2 books ready to jump into when you are done.

Love this book and the whole series. Odd Thomas is a character you can really love. The characters are interesting and the suspense is good. Overall a great book.
