Book Description:
For twenty-eight years, things have been tripping along nicely for Cannie Shapiro. Sure, her mother has come charging out of the closet, and her father has long since dropped out of her world. But she loves her friends, her rat terrier, Nifkin, and her job as pop culture reporter for The Philadelphia Examiner. She's even made a tenuous peace with her plus-size body.

But the day she opens up a national women's magazine and sees the words "Loving a Larger Woman" above her ex-boyfriend's byline, Cannie is plunged into misery...and the most amazing year of her life. From Philadelphia to Hollywood and back home again, she charts a new course for herself: mourning her losses, facing her past, and figuring out who she is and who she can become.

I laughed, I cried. This was one of my favorite books ever. A great read for anyone who just doesn't love the way they look.

Wonderful "beach read" (I couldn't put it down on my last trip to Key West) but this author writes a better character and plot than I find in most quick reads.

I fell in love with Cannie (main character) and was so sorry the book had to end.

Seems like an easy beach read at first, but you'll find yourself sucked this compelling story of how one woman searches to find peace with her true self. Rich, complex, and funny.

I so enjoy Jennifer Weiner's novels. She makes me laugh as well as feel sad with the twists and turns she weaves into her stories. Her main characters are interesting and multidimensional and always learn something from the lives they lead. I can hardley wait to receive my next novel by her!

Great read. About the way a plus sized girl lives her life and how she
deals with being plus. For people like me who are plus sized it gives the
way you can deal with your body and learn to love it.

This was the first book I've read by Jennifer Weiner. I enjoyed it immensely. It was refreshing for the main character to be an ordinary woman with weight and self-esteem issues. I will definitely read more by this author.

The beginning of the book is ok but drags to the point it makes it difficult to get into. Then it goes to a dark, unhappy place and stays there for too long. However the ending makes up for it and the end result is a relatively decent read. Good for the beach or poolside as it is easy to pick up and put down as needed.

I did not enjoy this book. I read it upon a recommendation from a friend, but I just couldn't get in to it! However, I was pleased with the ending. I will give the author another chance as I hope to see better novels from her in the future!

Could not finish. Unbelievable story line, had to quit midway through because of the impossibility of it all.

This book is better than I expected. I thought it would be a nice, fluff read. Although it was indeed an easy read, it is actually a well-written, insightful and extremely funny book. There is quite a bit about sex -- as is suggested by the title -- but I believe the title is misleading, as the book is more substantive than the title would have one believe. I would say that the book is more about a funny, intelligent girl with a weight problem, who has her share of neuroses and is trying to make her way in this crazy world that we live in.

I have to say that this book was a pleasant surprise! Several of my younger friends had read this book over the summer, and I just didn't expect to like it that much. I didn't expect to really like the main character, Cannie, so very much. It's a wonderful story about learning to love who you are no matter what your size. And some of the writing is just down right, raucously FUN!! I laughed out loud on several occasions loud enough that my coworkers were peeking around the corner of my cube to see what got me so tickled! Treat yourself to this book!

I love how this was a story of a "real girl" and Weiner really hits how us girls think and feel in the real world. I can relate to the melt down and blonde moments

“Cannie is a 28-year-old Philadelphia Examiner reporter preoccupied with her weight and men, but able to see the humor in even the most unpleasant of life's broadsides. Even she is floored, however, when she reads "Good in Bed," a new women's magazine column penned by her ex-boyfriend, pothead grad student Bruce Guberman. Three months earlier, Cannie suggested they take a break apparently, Bruce thought they were through and set about making such proclamations as, "Loving a larger woman is an act of courage in our world." Devastated by this public humiliation, Cannie takes comfort in tequila and her beloved dog, Nifkin. Bruce has let her down like another man in her life: Cannie's sadistic, plastic surgeon father emotionally abused her as a young girl, and eventually abandoned his wife and family, leaving no forwarding address. Somehow, Cannie stays strong for family and friends, joining a weight-loss group, selling her screenplay and gaining the maturity to ask for help when she faces something bigger than her fears. Weiner's witty, original, fast-moving debut features a lovable heroine, a solid cast, snappy dialogue and a poignant take on life's priorities. This is a must-read for any woman who struggles with body image, or for anyone who cares about someone who does.” ~ Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information, Inc.

I have fallen in love with Jennifer Weiner’s style. I saw so much of Cannie in myself it was almost uncanny (no pun intended) at times! I too am a “larger woman” and this book taught me that larger women are indeed capable and deserving of love and the good things in life. I related to these characters and this story. Extraordinary things happen to Cannie, all of them of her own making and because she always has the power, even when things go wrong, to look on the bright side and revel in the love of her family and friends. Despite the fact that this review sounds like a gushing teenie-bopper drama, the book is anything but and is a must-read for any woman who has ever had self-esteem doubts.

Five stars! Rave Reviews! 

This is such an endearing book! I loved it! I could not put it down! I cannot wait to read the others she has written. Jennifer is the every woman who is not a perfect size 4, 6 or even 10! I loved it. the story basically starts off with Cannie separating from her boyfriend of 3 years. She finds out that he has written an article about her and its title is no less then "Loving a Larger Woman" can you imagine what life is like after someone actually writes about you like that? Its not enough she has dealt with her size on her own, but to see it in print and have her intimate details out for the world to see! She begins a remarkable journey that doesn't end in the perfect ever after, but still good enough that we can wake up tommorrow encouraged by the fact that it is another day and a new adventure awaits... Its up to you to make it a good or a bad day...

I read this book because of all the great reviews it got. WELL.... to me it was so-so. It was hard for me to get into....took me forever to get through....some days I was dreading on reading it. (but the kind of reader I am, needing to finish a book even for just the sake of finishing it... a little obsessive compulsive I know) I found the heroine to be a little whiney, ... no wait A LOT whiney, irritating and could not relate to her in anyway. All in all....like i said - a "so-so" book.

This was a fun read, but not quite what I expected. Weiner is an entertaining writer, but the second half of the book was filled with one too many "storybook endings".

You'll think this is going to be a quick, easy travel or weekend read, but that is not the case. You can't help but be completely sucked into this one from the first page to the last, and in the end, you'll be wishing there was an immediate sequel, you'll be so in love with Cannie. If you are perfectly flawless, you won't relate to this book. The rest of us will most definitely find ourselves hidden somewhere in the pages.
