Book Description:
Like a dandelion in the wind, Hope Ladley blows from one farm to the next, helping cook for the field hands during the harvest. Illiterate and often twisting cliches and Bible verses into mind-boggling observations, Hope leaves widower Jakob Stauffer baffled by her unconventional ways. But her sunny disposition and unstinting love make changes of a different kind around the place. His little daughter and the pregnant sister he's shielding from an abusive husband adore Hope, and things are getting accomplished even if Hope's methods are unique.

Then Jakob's brother-in-law shows up and threatens the newfound peace and happiness of the farm. With Jakob's future uncertain and his heart tangled, can the farmer convince Hope to take root and remain as his wife?

Cathy Marie Hake has a gift for bringing out the goofiness in us through her characters. This time she does it again in spades. Hope finds herself led by God to a farmer and his sister. She convinces them that they need her, especially Annie. Jakob doesn't see that he needs help on the farm, but because of his love for his sister and daughter, he agrees.

Now, as is classic Cathy, Hope can't just be some ordinary do gooder. No, she has the uncanny ability to mess up sayings. For example, Hope will say something like "a cut above the best" instead of "above the rest". And the funny part is, her explanation as to why she says it her way makes complete sense! As a side note, Hope is completely sincere in her mistakes! She has these "sayings" throughout the book!

Jakob and Annie are struggling in their own lives. Jakob has lost his wife and Annie is hiding from an abusive husband. Neither of them realize what a balm and strenght Hope will be in their lives.

If you've never read any of Cathy's books before, this one is a fantastic one to start off with! She has numerous books that I would refer to as Hysterical Historicals.

What a wonderful book! You can just picture in your mind Hope as she's riding along in her cart with her mule wearing a straw hat. Hope is a hard-working young lady, who really doesn't realize the balm she brings to those she's helping. Lots of laughter in this book, yet deals with some serious situations. Highly recommend.

This is another wonderful author that writes a good yarn. This book will keep you smiling while enjoying a good story. Lot's of good thoughts about living life to the fullest. I have ordered many other books from this same author and recommend this book as a feel-good book.

I LOVED this book! The characters are very endearing and believable. She included some interesting little details about the German immigrants and their farming traditions that I found fascinating. Great and speedy read! Always want to know more about her characters!

This is such a sweet story! I loved the characters. I was surprised with the marital abuse aspect of the story. You never hear about abuse in the 1800's but it happened then just as it does today. Of course, everything worked out in the end. I really enjoyed Hope and her "mangled cliches". This is the 2nd book in the "Only in Gooding" series and I would recommend it highly.

Another excellent story by Cathy Marie Hake--I've not been disappointed in any of her books yet. Hope is a quirky, joyful itinerant cook that brings sunshine into the lives of Jakob Stauffer, his sister Annie, and his daughter Emmy-Lou. I didn't want to put this book down and only stopped reading at 2 AM because I had to go to work the next morning--otherwise I would have stayed up all night.
