I feel the writer has made an excellent first fantasy novel.focusing very much on the characters and politics of the realm, assuming you already know how the magic works. But, along the way, you pick up hints and intrigues.Hopefully, this will be the beginning of a very wonderful career for Gail.I read it in one sitting, a feat even she seemed to find astonishing. When the next one comes out, I will be sure to set aside some quiete time and devote my full attention and reread the first and then move on.The characters are not too complicated and are easy to like, the world is interesting and familiar at the same tim.If you enjoy personal quests with magic in alien worlds, you will like this book!

The writer shows promise, but it the story was too "pat"; the details were not fleshed out. Maybe the second book will be better.

This is your basic quest novel and it is very Dungeons and Dragons-esque. The ideas behind the culture and characters are interesting and make it worth the read but they are not fully fleshed out yet. The dialogue is a little iffy in places but overall a good first attempt by the author. I'm curious to see how her writing improves in the sequel.
