Harris has written a very good suspense novel about crime in modern Russia which revisits the Stalinist era and all its horror. Stalin makes bin Laden look like a school boy. Leave it to the Cold War scholars to revisit this past in an exciting cop story. This is a good read.

Bad Business (Spenser, Bk 31) (Audio Cassette) (Unabridged)
Review Date: 3/18/2011

Another great Spenser mystery. Complicated as Parker can make it. I really like Joe Mantegna as narrator. He makes a great Spenser. Plus he does the female characters well too. I would listen to it again and I know how it turns out. And ya gotta love Hawk.

Its a slog for me to adjust to this German family narrative of the late 19th century. Thomas Mann might have been very popular once. Can't see it now.

Very nice collection of crime noir short stories with our nation's Capitol as the background. Esp. enjoyed some of the older writers, Ellison, etc. Think I'd like to find volume 1 of this editor, Pelecanos, a great writer. And maybe read some of the other cities. So keep posting.

Another great Barr book set in a National Park with Park Ranger Anna Pigeon. This one is at Dry Tortugas NP off Key West. It was once a Union Civil War fortress and then prison, including the famous Dr. Mudd of the Lincoln assassination conspiracy, officially at least. Barr uses a literary technique of two alternating chapter narrators, one from now, one from the 1864. Thus one new crime and one very old unsolved one. It will make you want to go there.

An Invisible Thread: The True Story of an 11-Year-Old Panhandler, a Busy Sales Executive, and an Unlikely Meeting with Destiny

Excellent read. A real surprise. Not usually my kind of book. A great story of compassion and empathy. What America needs to hear and claim, especially now. But I am holding onto my copy, for now. Too good to let go. Also great material for writing.

This is an extremely interesting and helpful history of Jerusalem and its long and complicated history. Armstrong has studied the three major faiths of the book, Judaism, Christianity and Islam. She presents the material fairly and thoroughly with her own viewpoint. This is a great book to read as preparation for a journey to the city itself.

Another "hard-boiled" Pelecanos 'D.C' crime novel. Really captures part of the '70s post Vietnam culture. Love the early looks at key characters, Marcus Clay and Dimitri Karas. Lots of great references for the rock/soul/funk audiophile too.

This is an excellent balanced book for insights into the Israeli/Palestinian situation, two or more peoples claiming one land. It has strength in its interviews and background research on two families, one Arabic, one Israeli who live in one particular home in Israel/Palestine before and after the creation of the State of Israel. It traces both families over 60 years or more. Very insightful. Well written by Sandy Tolan.

Maigret and the Apparition (Maigret, Bk 62)
Review Date: 9/26/2014

In this short (159pp)translated edition of the Maigret series, by Georges Simeon, Chief Superintendant Maigret is called upon to solve with much help attempted killing of his colleague, detective Lognon. We learn a little about the art selling community of Paris and Europe in this always surprising story of twists and one final turn.
Interestingly, in England, they published this story as Maigret and the Ghost. Think you will enjoy.

I enjoyed this mystery. Has its mathmatics back story but not enough to scare the non-mathematician. Appeals to those of an accademic bent and those who like English, esp. Oxford settings. Reminds a little of an Inspector Morse story.

Very enjoyable sequel to Gorky Park. The quietyly irresistable Investigator Renko is no longer that but now Seaman Renko cleaning fish on a Soviet factory fishing ship in the Bering Sea. The death of a female crew person brings him back into his old job with none of the perks. Except contact with the Americans in this joint fishing trip. Lots of Soviet era cynical conversation and insights into life at sea in the fishing industry. Nice aspects of Alaska too.

Another great Spenser adventure, this one with a Western US setting. All the usual great Spenser characters and thugs. He touches his bases in L.A. Hawk great as usual as Afr-Amer. colleague to Spenser. A little of shrink girlfriend Susan, not enough. Moves slowly for first 200 pages, flys at the last 90. Great read.

Well written, though very dark and somber. It's a bleak look at an apocalytic world where survival is preeminent. It is a great father and son love story. Hang in for the end.

Good start to a great series. Very interesting to look at how modern English detective work could have begun in Medieval England. I'd say Dr. Knight did his homework well. Thoroughly enjoyed.
