I had heard wonderful things about this book and was prepared to be impressed. I wasn't.
There are some twists I did not see coming, but honestly, this book was a let down. Not a keeper in any way. I did not recommend this to my father or anyone else. Anything good, I refer to my father.
Lots of sexual tendencies and violence, but nothing to stir the senses. I did not think this book took off until about half way through.
The mystery itself was good.
Most of this book was NOT believable.

Having never seen the show, I cannot and will not try to compare the two. I do think that this is one of the most originally written stories of serial killers that I have ever read. It is completely first person. And Dexter, true to serial killer type believes he has NO emotions. I disagree, but he does put on a good show. The fact that he uses his "gift" to rid the world of other serial killers------------I APPLAUD!!!!!!!!!!! Why can't this be true in real life? Dexter is an interesting person who constantly fights with his alter self to be the good guy he knows he should be.
I think his sister is dimwitted not to know that there is something dangerous within him. For being a cop, she has no instinct. For having been his sister? Ignorance is bliss maybe?
I am eagerly awaiting the rest of the story.

If the author could quit obsessing about one of the main characters bodies, we might actually have a decent story. He has her pose nude and jump into bed with a man she met a few hours before "even though she knows it's not going anywhere". Any woman who actually does this does not behave in the manner this woman does. She goes from being independent and surviving on her own in NY to being totally dependent on this man she doesn't know. Amazing! Are we actually supposed to believe this? He describes her every bodily feature, but we are left wondering if she has a brain.
The other main character seems underdeveloped. He has no past, no future ambitions. You're not sure if he is anything other than an intelligent slug until our author decides to turn him into an action hero. Amazing!
I wouldn't read another of his books. I can usually finish this type of book in a few hours.... this one took me 4 days. I kept waiting for it to get better. I can not say who is the bigger fool, me or the person who wrote this book.

I thot this was a good read until the last part of the book. I literally sat down and read this book except for the last 20 pages in about a half day (this includes having 4 kids home so you do the math), but those last 20 pgs took me another half a day. I liked the fact that she put more detail into the journal of Mina to finish off the original Dracula story. The middle of the book describes Mina's dissatisfaction with her sexual life. She seeks outside of her marriage for a man who reminds her of Dracula. She takes no responsibility for her longing for sexual satisfaction, she blames it all on the fact that Dracula introduced his blood into her. It it his blood that causes her to be unfulfilled. Finally, the part that just killed the book for me is that she decides to "save" Dracula (and his brides) with the church that Dracula once belonged to. I guess if I was that unhappy with my sex life and and had spent the last few months longing for Dracula I would have went to join him, not try to kill him. But faced with eternal damnation, who truly knows what one would do? And really, do you think, that killing Dracula would cure her of wanting a better sex life? Yeah, me neither.
