I've been wanting to read this book since my grandmother passed away from encephalitis years ago. The book is well written, with short chapters so great for a pick up/put down kind of read. Most of the book gives great details into how her illness and seeking answers affects her, her friends and family. Super interesting. The last few chapters about recovery are a little slow and full of a lot of medical jargon that left me struggling to finish it. All in all a very interesting look into the health of the brain.

The book was well.. interesting. It kept my attention long enough to read it in one sitting. Part of me, though feels like maybe I read it to see how everything wraps up and I really don't feel like it did. I'm sure by now you know the beginning is based on a true story that the author then continued to finish. I never felt that there was real closure to the story. Are there exciting parts? Yes, but the are outweighed by this constant feeling of nothing really being answered.

It's been maybe over a month since I finished this book, but still find it hard to review. It's an incredibly emotional book about a mother and son held captive in a small shed and their experience surviving in and out of that shed. Written from the perspective of the 5 year old boy, Jack. Being a stay at home mom of a young child so many themes in this book hit home for me. It's a thrilling read and will keep you wanting more all the way to the end.
