All,

I have both happy and sad news!  The happy  news is that we have sent so many books to the USO they don't have any room for more, the sad news is I have to stop collecting books for now because ot if :)  The USO contacted me yesterday and said until they go through the books I have already sent, they do not have room for more.  I am thinking that those books will be gone in no more than a couple of months, if even that!  So until I hear back from them I won't be collecting books, but as soon as I get the okay I will be back in action.

The exception is the children's books!!!! They still need more children's books.  This is for the program where the soldier/parent make a video of themself reading the book and then sends the video and the book to the child.  This way the child has a small piece of their parent while the soldier is deployed.  I am going to start a new thread for that so check it out.

I can't begin to thank everybody who has made this possible.  We have had an AMAZING response and I know we have made a difference, so once again thank you so much for helping me do this.  I couldn't have filled up the store room of the USO without y'all!!!  I hope you will check back when I post again, because I will.

Happy Holidays,

JL

PS: I should also add that I will using the credits I earned from books sales and any credits donated to purchase children's books for the soldiers.  I believe this is fair as those books will not only help the soldiers but their families as well.  Two for the price of one :)  Also, if you have already sent books that I haven't received yet, don't worry, I will save those until they start accepting books again.

I would like to donate some books.  I have forwarded your post to the RI Local Chapter.

When are you sending the books out? Will you be sending multiple times if people keep sending books?

I will donate some credits if you run out.

J.L.  thank you for giving me a way to support our troops in a way I never thought of before.  I PM'd you for the address and will gladly pack up a bunch of my books to send to soldiers who need some place to escape!  :)

Is this an ongoing thing? I'd love to be able to send books this week and again in, say, three or four months. Also, what genres seem to do the best? I frequently pick up free books at the library- discards and stuff that people donate, mostly. I can also keep an eye out at garage sales this summer, and at the thrift store this winter.

Thanks for doing this. My husband was in the Navy before we met, and I know that he found one of his favorite authors by someone giving him a book while overseas. I know he'd be thrilled to help someone else out the same way.

My goal is to collect 200 paperbacks - I'll have to hit a few church sales / thrift shops. Anyone know anywhere else that books can be picked up cheaply.    I just missed buck-a-bag.
