The rich illustrations contain animals, but the text has nothing to do with animals; it has the same verbiage as any other story, describing the birth of Christ. Reading level is Step-1 (kindergarten -1st grade) as it has large sized text and a smaller amount of words per page. Some word's meanings are more challenging for a child, such as "decreed".
