This is an incredible story! As the opening salvo of this trilogy, Kaki Warner has virtually created an epic. However, if you are squeamish about violence, you might want to think twice about reading this story. I think Ms. Warner was true to the circumstances of the west; people often died violently because they were isolated on huge tracts of land, without help from anyone but their family/employees.

The book opens with Jesse Thornton running away from her home in England, on a stagecoach heading through the New Mexico Territory. The year is 1869. She is pregnant and alone; she is escaping from her abusive brother-in-law.

After a terrible accident, 5 stagecoach riders are left alive and 3 of them are injured, including Jesse. Brady takes all of them to his home. While a guest, Jesse falls in love with Brady and vice versa.

The story moves at a fast clip and theres lots going on in this tale. Jesse is very prissy and Brady has a wild sense of humor; the repartee between them is very funny! The characters literally jump from the pages, all hot and dusty! The characters are so real that they stay with you a long time!

There are so many layers in this story; I hesitate to tell too much and ruin the story for other readers. Ive read this book at least 4 times and I still cannot put it down until finished -- even though I know what is going to happen.
