The police have never liked Attorney Howard Elias who was constantly bringing cases against the Department. So when he is gunned down, there are a lot of suspects. Harry Bosch is assigned the case. He knows residents of the city may riot if the killer of the African American lawyer turns out to be a cop. As Harry, Kiz, and Edgar investigate, they go up against police bureaucrats who don't want this murder solved, and racial tension in the city of Angels. Harry also has to work with his nemesis, Internal Affairs Detective Chastain.

This is my favorite book in the series so far. Harry's marriage is imploding as he tries to piece together this case. He also gets involved in Howard Elias' latest civil rights case against the Department so we have two mysteries in this book. There are a lot of twists and turns in this story. I was actually surprised by the identity of the killer. My rating: 5 Stars.
