This is the third in Anne Perry's "Charlotte and Thomas Pitt" series set in Victorian London. The books read like novels of manners crossed with police procedurals. Perry has a wonderful grasp of the Victorian mindset and character and is skilled at revealing the hypocrisies of the upper classes.

In this installment, police Inspector Thomas Pitt investigates the rape and murder of a society girl from the elegant Paragon Walk neighborhood. His well-born wife, Charlotte, and Charlotte's sister, Emily, do some sleuthing of their own and discover something ugly is going on in the Walk, something that could lead to more deaths and even put them in danger.

The book is worth a read if you like the series but is not as good as the first two. I was intrigued by many of the characters and wanted to learn all their secrets, but the ending let me down. Still, no one brings to life the dysfunctions of Victorian society quite like Perry.
