A good read for older children and adults. A good study in growing up looking different than everyone else, being adopted, having a grandparent with dementia, and also of how WWII affected France even 50 years later. The detail of war crimes is probably a bit much for younger children; there is also a lot of time spent discussing breasts and puberty.

I had only one beef with the writing style; if there had not been French words sprinkled throughout, and if the secondary story had not been about the German occupation in France, I would have thought it was an American book. The poetry is in English, which means it wouldn't rhyme in French. All of the characters and conversations felt American to me.
