America came late into World War II, but with her entry the awakened "sleeping giant" brought to bear the most potent industrial and military machine the world had ever seen. Nowhere was this expressed more vividly than in the vast production of superb fighters that poured off the lines and into the ranks of her air force and navy and her allies throughout the world. Mustangs, Thunderbirds, Lightnings, Black Widows, Wildcats and Corsairs; these aircraft winged their way across the continents and oceans of the globe and wrought havoc amongst the dark forces of Hitler's Germany and Imperial Japan. These fighters and their aircrews symbolized the energy, enterprise, skill and spirit of America and played the decisive role in establishing peace in the war-torn world of the 1940's.

This book pays graphic tribute to these men and machines who, after many bloody battles, reigned victorious in the skies of Europe and the Pacific.
