This book just didn't speak to me; I really did not empathize with Dulcie. She has a strong sexual appetite but rejects it. She thinks men want only one thing and it colors how she treats Rye. In spite of the fact that he works continuously on her dilapidated farm, she makes him eat on the porch.

Dulcie made some poor choices (getting pregnant to snare a husband and giving sexual favors to the man who helped her get back to her hometown). She does not trust men and is constantly wondering when Rye is going to make a sexual move.

Oddly enough, it is Dulcie who makes the moves and Rye who avoids her. He has his own secret; he was the cause of her husband's accidental death. When Dulcie finds this out, she immediately throws him off the property. However, Rye continues to try to find out why her father was used as the scapegoat for the murder of a well-liked citizen of the town. Rye returns her scorn and anger with silent suffering and continued kindness. What did he see in Dulcie? I cannot imagine.

I like Maureen McKade's books because of the strong stories she writes. I just did not care for this one.
