This book had great promise, but it fell a little flat. The characters don't have much, well...character. None of them grabbed me, and most were pretty interchangable. There was no depth to them. Danae and Ramtat could have been made much better!

It wasn't just that--there were not many smooth segues in the dialogue, so conversations either ended instantly or the topic they were discussing jumped wildly and it took a lot of effort to try and get it back on track. Also, the love scenes were rushed; I know in romance novels the couple is supposed to hook up quickly, but these people went from hate to romantic sex in literally a paragraph. Quickly falling in love is one thing, but this was almost bipolar. And the hate resurfaces immediately after they finish the lovemaking. It's just hard to put myself in her shoes when she changes emotions that quickly and randomly.

Most of the historical details were fairly accurate, although there was a lack of description in some areas and that made it difficult to determine what the imaginary scene was really supposed to look like.

All in all, it was not a bad book. It was just a less-than-fully-engaging book.
