Information about the moon is explained in language simple enough for kids 9 and up. From its creation to what our world would be like without the moon, there's a range of fascinating details that will educate and captivate young readers.
First, let's get the crazies out of the way. If you're a creationist, this book will conflict with your views, as it discusses science - especially the creation of the moon and the destruction of dinosaurs on Earth millions of years ago. If you're one of those people who think the moon landing was faked, this isn't for you, because almost all of our knowledge of the moon begins with what was brought back from that landing. If you're in either of those groups but are still willing to allow your child to learn scientific realities, then you might want to pick this one up.
For parents who appreciate educational books, this one has me very curious about the rest of the series. It's well-written without being too far over the heads of young readers (or those adults whose astronomy is as weak as mine). The photos are full color, and range from pleasant to "wow..." In the back of the book is a useful glossary, a list of other books that might be of interest and an index. This would make a superb homeschooling book, as well as a great starting point for your budding astronomer. Author Don Nardo seems to know just how to challenge the reader without frustrating him/her right out of reading further.
