I'd call this a cozy, although maybe with a little harder edge than most. I like Summer (Sam), who throws herself into every problem she sees without much regard for the consequences. She does seem a little immature for almost 40, but Beason makes her pretty believable. I can also find much of the bureaucracy believable, unfortunately I have some experience there. Lots of POVs in this one, we bounce back and forth between Sam, her FBI boyfriend, and a few of the bad guys. A problem just for me though: because I like to read mysteries set in the "West", especially those involving nature, I'm running into the recurring theme of right-wing extremists attempting to kill off government personnel. Well - who "owns" the land is probably the second-biggest issue out here, right behind who owns the water, so it's not surprising that multiple authors are using it as a plot device. But I gotta admit, it's kind of depressing.
