I was expecting a book about a woman and her story with wolves. The book was actually about Helene growing up 'different', not fitting in with other children, and finally escaping the traditional child's world by entering the Paris Music Conservatory at the age of 13. Interspersed with the narration of her life are unconnected bits of history regarding wolves. Helene does not actually meet her first wolf until after page 200, and there is almost nothing to tell after the wolves join her life.

This is really a book about finding yourself, and of a musical journey. Other than the bits of history on wolves, it is almost not a book about wolves at all.
