Mike Gilbert is not exactly sharing profound stuff here. He was a tagalong of OJ and derived a good bit of his income (if not most of it) from brokering signing deals for OJ or selling merchandise OJ had signed. It was, thus, incumbent upon Gilbert to schmooze OJ any way he could and to play into OJ's God complex if he was to continue making the moola. The only problem was that Gilbert started to believe the OJ hype that he was a superior being who made the sun rise and fall.

It is clear that Gilbert had little sense of reality during his OJ days. He viewed Nicole as a moneygrubbing hanger-on, although he himself was one as well, but I digress . . . He also bought into OJ's self-serving stories of a) Nicole is crazy, b) OJ never wanted to let his fans down and c) that OJ was invincible. Because Gilbert was under OJ's spell, he failed to see OJ for who he was - a batterer, an angry sociopath and control freak, and a very poor friend, father, husband and role model. Gilbert admits his delusion and seems disgusted that he could fallen so far, especially when he reflects back on his grandparents' teachings. Moral of the story: could any of us have also been so deluded by such a large personality?
